You’ve probably heard the saying, “you are what you eat” many times before. Most people are interested in healthy eating to lose weight, but what about eating a diet based on the best foods for skin?
A healthy complexion is often indicative of a healthy diet. When you eat fast food, processed sugars, unhealthy fats, and not enough water, besides your waistline, your skin is often the first place that becomes visibly affected.
While not all skin conditions are controlled by diet, more and more studies are finding links between certain nutrients and wrinkle reduction, radiance, and acne prevention. The best foods for skin are those that are wholesome and natural, without those nasty chemicals or additives you can’t even pronounce.
What you eat effects how you look and feel, so to feel real beauty, start with what passes your lips and choose the best foods for skin.
Grocery List: Best Foods for Skin
Water. First and foremost, drink plenty of water. It’s vital for survival and makes up most of your body, so do yourself a favor and help keep things moving and hydrated. Try Jade’s tip for drinking more water.
Almonds. Packed with vitamin E, almonds can help defend against sun damage. In a recent study, people that consumed 14 milligrams of the vitamin E per day (about 20 almonds) burned less to UV light than those who took none.
Sweet Potatoes. These are one of the best foods for skin because they’re loaded with Vitamin C, which stimulates the production of collagen. Try making this healthier (and tastier!) version of fries: Slice in wedges and coat in 2 tablespoons of olive oil (another favorite healthy fat of ours). Sprinkle salt, pepper, cumin and paprika, then roast at 350 degrees for 45 minutes, flipping halfway through.
Safflower Oil. If you suffer from dry, itchy, and flakey skin, the omega-6 in safflower oil will help keep you moisturized.
Dark chocolate. We knew you would love this one! Dark chocolate is one of the best foods for skin because it contains high level of flavonols, an antioxidant that will improve your skin’s glow. Always opt for 70% or higher to reap all of the benefits.
Walnuts. Snack on walnuts every day to improve your skin’s elasticity and texture. Toss into cereal, oatmeal, or salads.
Bell Peppers. The best foods for your skin are often the most colourful. Choose green and yellow veggies like bell peppers because they contain cartenoids, which decrease skin’s sensitivity to the sun. Aim for two cups of peppers per day (they’re great for dipping into hummus!).
Tomatoes. Lycopene, the phytochemical that makes tomatoes red, helps eliminate skin-aging free radicals caused by ultraviolet rays. They also help control oily and acne-prone skin.
When you eat wholesome, your skin will show it. Combining a healthy diet with exercise and sleep will make a huge difference in how you feel and how you look. Choosing the best foods for skin is a good start, but no matter how many walnuts and tomatoes you eat, there are still some things that can’t be cured with a healthy diet. That’s where we come in.
