What Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a physical exfoliation procedure. It requires the use of a sterile, surgical scalpel to gently “shave” the skin’s surface, removing the top-most layer of dead skin along with fine, vellus hair(aka peach fuzz). The procedure can be performed monthly, in less than thirty minutes, with no downtime post-treatment. Dermaplaning is only performed on the face; however, it is not meant to be used to shape eyebrows. Around the corners of the nose are also avoided. Estheticians, nurses and doctors typically perform the treatment.
Benefits Of Dermaplaning Treatments
Physical exfoliation triggers the cell regeneration process and allows products to better penetrate skin. Some practitioners perform a mild to moderate peel post-dermaplaning depending on the sensitivity of one’s skin. Dermaplaning is also excellent to rid the face of excess fine hairs which can often accumulate dirt and oil. Contrary to popular belief, vellus hairs, as opposed to terminal hair, will not grow back thicker or darker. However, dermaplaning is not suitable for those with excessive facial hair. Laser hair removal would be most beneficial for that. Exfoliation of dead cells along with the removal of fine hairs results in healthier, brighter skin that has a smoother look and feel.
Who would be a good candidate for Laser Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is especially effective on those with dry or rough skin texture and helps to minimize superficial acne scarring or uneven skin tone. It is also beneficial for mature skin, which tends to have a buildup of dead cells as cellular turnover slows down with age. Dermaplaning is safe for pregnant or lactating clients who cannot have chemical peels (peels penetrate skin to act at the cellular level, thus are contraindicated).
When done with a trained professional dermaplaning is safe for all skin types. Those with sun damage, fine lines, dry patches, and dull skin will love this treatment. If you have highly reactive, sensitive skin you may want to try something more suitable such as Photorejuvenation with our BBL system.
Will Dermaplaning Treatments cause breakouts?
Quite the opposite, actually. A buildup of dead skin can clog your pores and hair follicles, which can not only cause pimples but also block your skincare products from penetrating the skin, which is why exfoliation is essential for maintaining an even, healthy glow. But, like I said, if you already have an existing breakout, you’ll unfortunately need to sit this treatment out.
Are Dermaplaning Skin Treatments Safe For My Skin?
Yes it is very safe! Dermaplaning is a low-risk procedure. Side effects may include slight redness in your face in the hours after getting the treatment. Some people develop whiteheads on their skin in the day or two after dermaplaning if their skin is not kept clean properly. Those with active acne should avoid this procedure as well as anyone with thick, dark facial hair. Acne prone skin can become sore and irritated with this procedure. Photorejuvenation with our BBL is also another alternative to help with Acne. Those wanting to remove excessive facial hair are also best to find an alternative route such as Laser Hair Removal. Dermaplaning ‘can’ be used to exfoliate dead skin cells on someone with thick coarse facial hair, however they would need to shave prior to the Dermaplane treatment.will.
Lastly before you panic there’s a little myth that needs to be rectified…no matter where it grows on your body, shaving does not cause hair to grow back thicker or darker. Many people think that shaving your legs or underarms causes thicker hair growth. This is false. It’s physiologically impossible for hair to grow back thicker because of shaving. Shaving simply creates a blunt tip on the hairs, which many people interpret as greater thickness. Like how a tree grows and gets thinner at the top. Hairs are the same. When you dermaplane, you are removing extremely fine hair called vellus hair. This hair is so thin and soft that removing it with a dermaplaning tool will have little to no impact on how it looks when it grows back. After removing the vellus hair, your skin will instantly feel and look smoother and brighter.
