What is acne?
Acne is a prominent skin disease characterized by blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, oily skin, and possible scarring. Although acne predominately occurs within the teenage years, both men and women of all ages can be affected. Genetics is thought to be the primary cause of acne in 80% of cases.
What causes acne?
It’s believed genetics and hormonal imbalances are the primary cause of acne, flare-ups can occur due to a variety of factors. An increase in the levels of hormones cause skin glands to produce more oil. These oils help to keep the skin moist, however when mixed with dead skin cells, the pores can become infected with bacteria and result in redness and swelling. This appears as inflammation with acne-like eruptions. The area affected can be very sensitive to harsh treatments and consequently leave acne scars.
Treatment Options
Everybody’s skin has different compositions; therefore, finding the proper treatment is based on a person-to-person basis. The type of treatment depends on the form of acne such as mild, moderate or severe. Treatment can include proper skincare, dietary changes, hormonal therapy, oral medication or broad band light therapy.
Broad Band Light (BBL) Photofacial Treatment For Acne
At Urban Body Laser we have successfully treated acne sufferers with the use of Broad-Based Light (BBL™) therapy. This can be an amazing alternative for those who prefer not to consume oral medications (like Accutane.) The shorter wavelengths of BBL™, in the blue-light range, assault p-acne microscopic organisms at first glance and in the sebaceous glands. Combined with a personalized home skin care program many patients have found long term relief using broad band light therapy.
What causes scars?
Acne scars occur with the inflamed blemishes becomes engorged with excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. The swelling from the pore creates a break in the follicle wall. The infected tissue spills out and can destroy healthy skin tissue. In an attempt to healt itself the skin forms new collagen fibers. (Collagen being the protein that gives the skin its strength and flexibility.) Sadly, the repaired skin may not look as smooth and flawless as before the acne occurred.
What happens during a BBL Treatment?
During a BBL Photofacial treatment for acne a thin layer of gel is smoothed onto your skin, followed by a series of pulses using the BBL light machine. The treatment is mildly uncomfortable but most patients report little pain. BBL Treatment sessions last between 20-30 minutes, with a series of treatments required, the number can vary from person to person.
What should you expect after treatment?
After treatment some patients may encounter temporary redness and minor swelling of the affected area, this should subside in 1-2 days. We offer all our patients mineral make-up to cover any redness so they can go about their day, no downtime after treatment is required.
How can you prevent future breakouts?
Here’s a few tips you can incorporate into your day to day life to help prevent breakouts.
Use proper skincare– Wash your face twice a day with a cleanser specifically designed for acne prone skin. Create a routine of washing your face when you first wake up in the morning and then again before going to bed. Be gentle when you wash your skin and avoid rough wash cloths, gentle circular motions using your fingertips works best. Refrain from over washing your skin as this will urge your sebaceous glands to deliver more sebum, consequently creating further skin break outs.
Keep hair clean- The oils in your hair can trigger breakouts. Those prone to acne should keep hair pulled back and off your face, also wash hair often and after sports or strenuous workouts.
Vitamins – Depending on nutrition, acne can be a signal that there is something wrong on the inside. When the body does not receive the proper nutrition it rebels by producing excessive sebum, clogging pores, and reduces the ability for your skin to fight bacteria and heal.
Makeup – Numerous popular make-up lines contain ingredients that are prone to clogging pores and thus causing more breakouts. Choose mineral make-up when possible. Our medispa recommends Colorescience products to keep skin healthy.
Clean pillowcase – Your pillowcase can absorb the oils and dirt that are detrimental to those suffering with acne-prone skin, wash pillow cases and all towels and linens often.
Foods rich in zinc – Diets low in zinc may actually cause acne breakouts because zinc has an antibacterial agent that keeps your skin in check.
Apply a honey mask – The antibacterial properties found in honey may help to prevent and treat minor blemishes.
